Share. I think that would be impossible for Edward Abbey to leave out, but it is certainly more tempered. At first this book reads like an old outdoorsman's fantasy of deflowering a young virgin and then making it with her all over the place on a picnic blankets under the clouds. The writing alternates between gorgeous and cringe-y, and the plot is pretty predictable -- still, Abbey sucked me in and made me care about the characters, and I read this one quickly. Hey, maybe I'm wrong, but until I came to this conclusion I honestly thought this book was pointless, and perhaps even a little embarrassing for such a fantastic writer. Not a good starting point for anyone interested in Abbey (I suggest Desert Solitude, Monkey Wrench Gang, and The Journe. And then I realized I'm only a year younger than the main charac. Historically, when fictional/fantasy literary landscapes have so often erased whole races, cultures and gender identities, Black Sun's alternative landscapes restore a plurality and give those voices space to be heard...continued. He is apparently in love, but will not give her any commitment. His imagery in Black Sun is like poetry: beautiful enough to make you cry. After finishing this book, I read through some of the reviews of this and other of Abbey's books. Far from being what many describe as a tale about an older man taking advantage of a young woman, this book to me seemed to be more about a young woman being brave enough to walk away when love might have convinced her to stay. In some ways I relished reading his earthy love/sex scenes, reminiscent of the scenes from D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterly's Lover.
