The world of animals is no doubt interesting, but then there are some things about certain animal species that go well beyond interesting … into the realm of unusual. With its reddish fur and erect ears, the maned wolf looks a lot like your typical red fox, with one glaring exception—it has long, delicate legs that would look more at home on an African gazelle than any kind of wolf. Here's a new list of 21 more animals you've most likely never heard of, and probably won't see prancing around your backyard anytime soon. They also tend to be more colorful than their larger cousins, with the yellow-footed wallaby boasting yellow-orange features across its coat. Like mitochondria, chloroplasts have outer and inner membranes, but within the space enclosed by a chloroplast’s inner membrane is a set of interconnected and stacked fluid-filled membrane sacs called thylakoids (Figure 3). Longevity Compared with animals from other temperate land masses, many native New Zealand animals live for a long time. The maned wolf, or Chrysocyon brachyurus, is a member of the canid family, which includes dogs wolves, and foxes. In the following slides, we'll explore the basic characteristics shared by all (or at least most) animals, from snails and zebras to mongooses and sea anemones: multicellularity, eukaryotic cell structure, specialized tissues, sexual reproduction, a blastula stage of development, motility, heterotrophy and possession of an advanced nervous system. These seven mammals are among the world’s weirdest, with highly unusual looks, bodily features more commonly found in reptiles or birds, and surprising defense mechanisms. For example, the kākāpō bird may live for 70 years, stitchbirds for 34 years, and kiwi for at least 30 years. These things usually revolve around their physical characteristics and behavior. This is a major difference between plants and animals; plants (autotrophs) are able to make their own food, like sugars, while animals (heterotrophs) must ingest their food. Even if you're a dedicated animal enthusiast, you can't honestly expect to know all of the 1,367,555 non-insect animal species, that are identified on the face of Earth today! Animals have their own unique personalities, several recent studies have found, with many species showing certain characteristics more than others. There are roughly 30 different species of wallabies, grouped by their habitat: shrub wallabies, brush wallabies, and rock wallabies.
